First of all getting them to just sit down was a mission and when that was done getting them to concentrate was a mission. Roderick had so many big projects to finish this week and he was not a happy chappy. He needed to complete a 2 meter long timeline of the world and colour and cut out Easter eggs for a picture, he doesn't like colouring but did his best, I had to help with cutting out the grass, that crap is hard, to be fair he was mostly unhappy this week because his birthday was coming up and we had to cancel his party like everyone in these last couple months.

On the bright side the weather warmed up slightly again and we were able to spend some time outside soaking up the sunshine

We finished the week with Roderick having a long video chat with teachers and classmates which was pretty fun for him although with 20ish kids talking all at once its hard to get a word in edgewise so I think he mostly listened. Here are some of the pictures.

I will admit it has been an interesting experience and were it not for everything being in a German I'm pretty sure I would have managed a whole lot better, as it is my google translate is working overtime and sometimes the translations don't make sense so I have to go get a second opinion from Hubby or Ray who luckily is fluent.

I will probably come update as I remember more, note to self to not put of writing while its all fresh, And now for some much needed holidays!!!
Cheers to all the parents who are homeschooling and to the teachers who are working overtime to provide the content for us parents to do at home, and of course to all the healthcare workers who are also working overtime to try and help everyone they can, we are in this together!!! Stay Healthy :) 💙
SerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-38096595267798367292020-03-31T15:38:00.001+02:002020-04-17T09:09:24.104+02:00Quarantine and Homeschooling week 2!!!Week two passed without too much Drama, I made a loose schedule back in week 1 and we loosely stuck to it, getting all three kids at the table doesn't always happen, our 14 year old prefers to do school in bed but that is OK as long as she is getting it done, she is also called by her teachers periodically to give her German practice so I'm pretty sure her work is happening as it should.

One drastic thing that changed this week was the weather, week 1 was beautiful going up to 20 degrees, week 2 went way down to about 4-5 degrees with a wind chill making it feel -4 but at least its not snowing again like it did in Germany, I would not have been happy with snow.

Thankfully the sun was shining most of the week so its not all cold and gloomy, Saturday got up to 15 so we managed to go to the empty school yard and play some tennis and bit of soccer.

we are trying to keep the kids schedule similar to their usual school schedule except with a bit more sleep in in the morning(their usual times are to wake up between 6-7) so now its 8 with a school start of 9am which works fairly well, they also have a bit more of a longer lunch time and can finish in the afternoon whenever their work is done.

Another big thing that happened this week was that at Leona's last X-ray on Thursday they decided her harness can come off, its been on for 6 weeks so she is thrilled to finally have it off, she can now wear her shirts normally again, she is not allowed though to put put any weight on it or pick up anything yet which is hard but she seems to be managing, she was also given exercises to do at physio and I'm pretty sure she is not doing them as much as she needs to so every time I see her I make her do them in front of me, its just a matter of time before this is all behind us, I will do a post on what happened in more detail later.

Friday I went out for the first time in almost two weeks and I got quite excited, it was just to go down the road to Leona's physiotherapy appointment but still, I also went into Otto's to grab some shampoo and wow, the changes in the shops that are still open are eerie, but that will be a separate post, here are some pictures of the last week, Stay Healthy :)
We had this crazy idea that we wanted to live here, Hubby finally convinced me and we were off on a one way ticket with only our suitcases and not knowing a single soul here, the first two months we lived in the family room at the Passantenheim run by the Salvation Army while Hubby brushed up on his German while at the same time looking for a job, was it crazy? Maybe, we didn't know what would happen and if we would find what we were looking for, and then it all happened fast, we made some friends, Hubby found a job that he still has 8 years later and we were accepted into an apartment and then time just flew by, of course it hasn't been without struggles and challenges but all in all we made a home here, traveled, seen many beautiful places, done some amazing hikes had many friends and family visiting and thoroughly enjoyed our life in CH
Happy Swissversary to us!!!
These are some of the first photos we took here, how small were the munchkins
Quarantine and Lockdown!!! two words I never thought I would be using in my lifetime yet here we are, 3 months into 2020 and the entire world is in quarantine and most countries are on lockdown.
Meaning don't leave your house unless its an emergency!

Thanks to the new sickness called the CoronaVirus EVERYTHING is cancelled and shutdown, everything except supermarkets, Pharmacies and banks(which are even starting to close).
Everything is new and different, oh yea the schools closed almost two weeks ago too, so everyone in Switzerland and many other countries are now homeschooling(ahhh the flashbacks) its all a little too closely related to my life growing up in which I was homeschooled, except now I'm the teacher and the school is in German. Its been ok so far and not too stressful(thank goodness for Google translate) but still not easy and the kids actually miss going to school, not sure if thats a good thing or an insult 😂

I would have thought I would come out of this with a drinking problem(remember I'm homeschooling in German) but having had waaay too many headaches over the first week I have also given up alcohol for now, every time I had a beer I would have a headache through the night and most of the next day, so I switched to non-alcoholic beer and the headaches were gone, I had my first beer in a week two days ago and yup, headache all night and most of the next day, damn, I really want a beer.
In week 1 we were lucky enough to have gorgeous weather so we could go spend some time outside in our beautiful garden, we spent some time reading, playing birdie, eating popcorn and practicing with Roderick's Bow and arrow set and just generally soaking up the Vitamin D, thats all for now, Stay Healthy :)

My birthday was fun, we had friends over with some drinks and lots of Flammkuchen that Zeth made, its soooo yummy :) and everyone seemed to get along yay :P

The kids went for a sleepover at their Grandmas last night and waking up this morning in a completely empty silent house this morning at 9:30 and then folding the laundry without little ppl trying to kill each other was quite an amazing feeling, I could almost get used to it, luckily the kids love their Grandma and she doesn’t mind having all three at once(score) :P (I think summer holidays are great and I love summer but after awhile a few short breaks now and again are oh so special)

I just realised I have read so many books that I'm forgetting what I read so I am going to start a post and list as many as possible maybe with a short summery.

I think I will go make cookies now with the kids, because its raining and feels like a cookie day :P

Update: and 2 hours later ta da, delish oatmeal chic chip cookies 🍪👍👌😍

SerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-2339929453007452822016-06-23T08:50:00.005+02:002016-06-23T08:51:32.007+02:00Summer Holidays are almost upon us!!!Well we did it! made it to the end of another school year, well in a week we have anyway :)

the last two weeks is always so chock full of school events its hard to keep up, esp in another language. But I guess I'm doing ok with the help of Google translate, gosh thats a lifesaver! it will translate an entire page, very roughly but I seem to get the gist of it ha.

We are also having some real summer days at last hooray!!! I'm hoping to take the kids swimming this arvo, after Ray gets back from his class zoo trip.

Now my next big thing to do is plan the two older kids birthdays and send out the invites, the birthdays aren’t till August but people here seem to send them out at least 3 weeks to a month in advance, Ray wants to have a movie/sleepover party with a few close friends and Leona wants her entire class to come which means forest party as there is no way we can fit 20+ kids into our teeny apartment :P

As for summer our only big plan so far is a week of camping in the first week of August, which means(weather permitting)the whole month of July will be spent at the pool.

My birthday is coming up in a week as well and its probably the first time I'm looking forward to it for years! we are inviting some friends over for a party yay!

thats all for now, just wanted to put down a few thoughts to keep this thing updated, I'm not doing as well as I hoped to but where there is life there is hope hahaha, sorry just something that popped into my mind just now

SerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-59186235816042434202016-05-19T09:38:00.000+02:002016-05-19T09:38:08.553+02:00all about school!so there is this great school in our town where the kids who are not ready for the fast pace of normal school can go, this completes the first grade in two years instead of one, that way the kids can go at a slower pace and have alot more sports/playtime.

We were told about it when after coming to Switzerland 4 years ago our oldest Leona (then 7years old) was put straight away into first class without knowing a single word of German and she was lost and struggling (of course) when a sub teacher who was there shortly saw her struggles and right away called us in to explain about this special school where alot of kids learning the language can go, the classes are smaller and they can get alot more one on one, so after visiting the child psychologist who needed to give permission to attend the special school she was moved 3 months later and once there she really blossomed, made friends and learned German so that once she went to second class she was better able to keep up.

then our next child Raymond, who had just gone through two years of Swiss kindy and was fluent in Swiss-German went to first class only to be moved a few months later as well because he was having trouble understanding Hoch Deutsch, he is now completing his second year of first class and is also doing really well.

On to child number three Roderick who is 6 years old and still in his last year of kindergarten, yay, anyway so we were thinking(along with his amazing kindy teacher) that of course he will probably need to go to this special school as even though his Swiss-German is coming along the normal school is in Hoch Deutsch (high German) so she helped us by making a referral to the child psychologist who needs to "ok" a child going there, after several visits where she did some stuff with Roderick to find out where is was in regards to his age range she concluded that he is eligible to attend the special school.
He can not wait to start after the summer holidays and we are of course very happy that he will not have to be moved after three months like the other two but can start straight away
here is the original link

Prepare your vegetables. Chop 1 large onion into small dice, about 5mm square. The easiest way to do this is to cut the onion in half from root to tip, peel it and slice each half into thick matchsticks lengthways, not quite cutting all the way to the root end so they are still held together. Slice across the matchsticks into neat dice. Cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. Peel and finely chop 2 garlic cloves.

Start cooking. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot (a little longer for an electric hob). Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently, for about 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft, squidgy and slightly translucent. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder or 1 level tbsp mild chilli powder, 1 tsp paprika and 1 tsp ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Brown the 500g lean minced beef. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. The mix should sizzle a bit when you add the mince. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, mince-sized lumps and there are no more pink bits. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew.

Making the sauce. Crumble 1 beef stock cube into 300ml hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open 1 can of chopped tomatoes (400g can) and add these as well. Tip in ½ tsp dried marjoram and 1 tsp sugar, if using (see tip at the bottom), and add a good shake of salt and pepper. Squirt inabout 2 tbsp tomato purée and stir the sauce well.

Simmer it gently. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy.

Bring on the beans. Drain and rinse 1 can of red kidney beans (410g can) in a sieve and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again, and gently bubble without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Taste a bit of the chilli and season. It will probably take a lot more seasoning than you think. Now replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving, and relax. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the flavours to mingle and the meat.

Rather than add the teaspoon of sugar, you can stir in a small piece of chocolate (about the size of your thumbnail) when you add the beans. Any plain dark chocolate will do. Be careful not to add too much – you don’t want to be able to identify the flavour of the chocolate.

then Leona picked up on it when a boy from her school asked her over to his place, she didn't know the way so she met him at school and they walked to his house together then when it was time to come home Janik(the friend)walked her back to school and she came home from there, he is a very cute boy with an earring(alot of guys and young boys alike wear a single earring) and he told his Mom he wants to learn English so that he can marry Leona and asked his Mom to speak English to him on the weekends, very determined he is, well today she is at another boys house and I'm so happy this is finally happening for both of them they really needed bffs that they can grow up with :)SerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-89282336908466542472014-02-16T15:06:00.001+01:002014-02-17T13:51:56.445+01:00musings

I started Muki-Deutch again and go with Roderick on Mondays, then Tuesday and Wednesday Roderick is in playgroup in the mornings and will hopefully be fluent in German by August which is when he starts Kindy...

We have been seeing a psychologist for children with Leona and she is trying to help with many of things Leona is going thru at school, she will hopefully be tested soon by drs so we know if she has aspergers-syndrome which will get her extra help in school and extra speech therapy to help with her language learning, we are also going to be talking to the head of Education(or something) to ask about wether or not we are allowed to home-school her as she is really not doing so well in a class and needs more attention, it seems it should be possible and my MIL will also be helping to teach her so once again fingers crossedSerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-91829883451596200542014-01-27T21:29:00.001+01:002020-04-17T10:17:34.999+02:00no titleI really want to do a long update, so much is going on but its hard to really sit down and put it into words so it will be quick for now,
we have been making plans for the year and the different holidays etc and I excited about the upcoming ski trip next week in the sports holiday and a camping trip we are planning for the summer holidays, we got a awesome 3 room tent brand new at a second hand price and have reserved the site in the campground yaySerenaRosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09518458056015310656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3897618004108852777.post-55781630339603186062013-08-04T16:23:00.001+02:002013-08-04T16:24:03.301+02:00feeling slightly confused these daysit seems to me that the more I see and hear of ppl I have grown up with or met over my travels through the years have almost all found that one thing( or many things) that they excel in and wonder what is different with me? why can't I find something that I even a little bit good at...there are several things I have tried and failed at over the past few years, things I have desperately wanted to be good at but just have no either creative ability or just no ability period, and there is so much more that I want to try but right now have neither the money nor the language ability to further my experiments...and all I want to know is why? why can I not find it, I'm feeling rather desperate and depressed at the thought that I'm 31 with not a single accomplishment to talk about, yes I know I have three beautiful children, a roof over my head and food and money in the bank so why am I so down? truthfully I am thankful for all that but there is just that nagging feeling of growing old as a failure at everything, not sure what to do at this point.

not sure if anyone is even going to read this but if you do please don't judge me too harshly, I'm just trying to make sense of my thoughts.
